I strongly believe that your home should be a reflection of you. It should show the personalities of the people who live there. Your home is the one place you and your loved ones can feel safe, secure and most at ease. Like Nate Berkus says “Your home should tell the story of who you are and be a collection of what you love”.
Our home has not felt like our sanctuary for a long time. When we moved into our 1930’s house back in 2007 we didn’t need to do much to the house right away. We painted all the walls and decorated to our taste at the time. That was lots of dark wood furniture. Well, with the years my taste have changed. Now I love a more clean and bright space with a touch of Scandinavian design and vintage industrial pieces. So it was time to start making my own home feel more like me again.
We opted to start with our main living area, the living room because that’s where we spend the majority of our time together. We had a big job to do there to reclaim the space our outdated fireplace was taking up. We didn’t use it much and it was really a focal point we didn’t want to focus on anymore.
We started work back in June and now we have our bright and airy base to start filling with stuff we really love. In this first part of our remodel look back I want to share some before and after images with you.
We did a lot of the work ourselves. When I say “we” I mean the hubster did most of it. We had a professional plasterer come in and do all the walls and the ceiling. That is just a skill we don’t possess so it was best to get a pro in to do it all. The first thing to go was that fireplace.
Next thing was the floor. O god how I wanted to see these gone for like ever. I was never a fan of the large seems and the orange tint of the pinewood. It made taking decent pictures in the living room quite a challenge.
Hello bare bones. I decided to take the time to see how the space felt to us before we started to put all kinds of furniture and accessories back in it. I have big plans still in the works for our living room. I’m on the hunt for some old doors for the space. But first, it was time to declutter and move stuff out that didn’t fit into my end design anymore.
All in all, I’m very happy with the results so far. Check back here next Wednesday to see my first DIY for this project.
