Tassels are super easy to make. They can make everything they are attached to go from drab to fab. I wanted to make some out of yarn this time around to cheer up my new woven bag.
This is a very easy DIY that can be done using leftover craft materials. So super handy to finish up your leftover stash. In my version, I’m using yarn but you can use any other material like leather or fabric.
This is what you will need.
- Piece of cardboard
- Embroidery floss
- Embroidery needle
Start making your tassel by winding your yarn around the piece of cardboard. I wanted my tassels to be a nice and full so I wound the yarn about 100 times around my piece of cardboard. When you have wound your yarn to your desired thickness cut your yarn from the yarn ball. Cut an extra piece of yarn to tie off the tassel with before you cut it from the cardboard.
To make this tangle of yarn into a tassel tie a piece of embroidery floss a few centimeters down from the top. Now go around the top part of the tassel a few times with your embroidery floss to make a nice band of colour on the top of the tassel. I used three different colours but you could stick to one if that’s what you want. In the picture below you can see how I change from one colour to the next. To make the ends of each colour neat and tidy I used my embroidery needle to tuck in the end of every row of floss.
When you’re done with the top part it’s time to get your scissors out and cut the yarn at the ends to make it all even. Tadaaa your tassel is ready.
Now you can use your tassels on pretty much anything. So go have fun with it.
